The history of Mansa Moussa and the gold mine of Wassoulor
Mansa Moussa was the King of Mali during the first half of the 14th century. The empire of Mali reached its zenith during his reign thanks to gold production.
In 1325 he made a pilgrimage to Mecca during which he was accompanied by 10000 people and brought many tons of gold with him.
When he got back from his journey, he brought with him many architects and scholars in order to modernize his empire. It is with the help of one of these architects that he built the Mosques of GAO, TIMBUKTU and DJENNÉ.
Under the rule of Mansa Moussa, peace and order reigned all over the country. He embarked upon exploiting the gold of Mali with gold washing techniques using many round shafts about 3 meters deep.
